eYE MOVEMENT DESENSITISATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach often used to help people process traumatic or distressing experiences. Some people may continue to feel the emotional impact of past events through flashbacks, intrusive memoiries, anxiety or heightened reactions to reminders of the past. EMDR therapy offers a structured and supportive way to work through these experiences and reduce the distress they can cause.

Understanding What’s Happening

When we experience trauma, the brain’s mormal way of rocessing information can become overwhelmed. Instead of being stored as something that happened in the past, the memory can remain “stuck” complete with the same feelings, images, and body sensations. This can lead to anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, guilt, shame, or sudden emotional reactions that don’t seem to make sense in the present.

EMDR helps to gently unlock this natural processing system. Using bilateral stimulation – such as side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or gentle taps – the brain is guided to reprocess traumatic  memories safely and effectively.

Through EMDR, the memory itself doesn’t disappear, but it’s power over you fades. What once triggered intense emotion or distress begins to feel distant, less charged, and no longer defines who you are or how you feel.

Many people begin exploring EMDR after searching for EMDR near me, trauma therapy in Scunthorpe or PTSD treatment in North Lincolnshire – it is one of the most trusted approaches for trauma recovery.

Working Together to Heal

EMDR is a structured yet flexible approach that moves at your pace. The process begins with careful preparation – helping you build the emotional stability and coping tools needed to feel safe and grounded.

Once you’re ready, we’ll work with specific memories or experiences that continue to affect you. During the reprocessing phase, I’ll guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation while you focus on aspects of the memory. Your brain naturally begins to connect fragments of information, making new, healthier associations and reducing the emotional pain attached to the memory.

Throughout the process, you remain fully aware, in control, and supported. EMDR does not involve hypnosis or reliving the trauma in detail – it’s about helping your brain to finish what it didn’t get to complete at the time of the event.

EMDR can be effective for:

  • Childhood sexual/physical or neglect
  • Natural disasters
  • Road traffic accidents
  • Assault

There is Hope
Healing from trauma is absolutely possible. EMDR can help you move from being constantly triggered, or emotionally flooded, to feeling calmer, more grounded, and more in control of your life.

Many people describe feeling lighter, clearer, and more at peace – no longer defined by what happened to them, but able to live with a sense of freedom and self-trust.

You don’t have to carry the past alone. With gentle support and the right approach, your mind and body can heal – allowing you to reconnect with safety, strength, and hope for the future.
