FIBROMYALGIA

Fibromyalgia counselling in Scunthorpe at Grey Matters Centre offers a supportive space to explore the emotional and psychological impact of chronic pain, fatigue and living with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia can bring a wide range of symptoms, from widespread pain and fatigue to sleep disturbance, memory issues, sensory sensitivity and overwhelming flare-ups.

The unpredictability of the “good days” and “bad days” can make it hard to plan, cope or feel in control. The emotional impact-grief, anxiety, frustration, stress or feeling isolated – is just as real as the physical symptoms.

Understanding What’s Happening

Fibromyalgia is more than just pain – it’s a whole-body condition that can affect energy levels, mood and concentration. For many people it develops after a period of prolonged stress, trauma or illness, while for others, there seems to be no clear cause.

When your body remains in a constant state of alert, your pain signals can become heightened and the body’s natural rhythms of rest, and recovery are disrupted. This can lead to a cycle of exhaustion, sensitivity, and emotional stress that feels hard to break.

You may notice:

  • Persistent, widespread pain or tenderness
  • Fatigue or poor-quality sleep
  • Difficulty concentrating (“fibro fog”)
  • Heightened sensitivity to noise, light or temperature
  • Feelings of low mood, frustration, or anxiety

Working Together to Heal

Therapy can help you make sense of what’s happening and rebuild a sense of safety within your body. Together, we explore how stress, trauma and emotional tension may be affecting your symptoms – not to blame, but to understand.

Our work focuses on supporting you in developing ways to soothe your nervous system, manage overwhelm, and restore a sense of connection between mind and body. This might involve gentle grounding techniques, pacing strategies, or finding new ways to hold compassion for yourself, even on difficult days.

There is Hope
While there may not be a single cure, healing and improvement are absolutely possible. Many people find that, with understanding and the right support, they can reduce their symptoms, increase their sense of control, and rediscover moments of peace and pleasure.

You do not have to face fibromyalgia alone. Together, we can work towards balance, resilience, and a life that feels more spacious, calm and manageable – one step at a time.
