RAPE/SEXUAL ASSAULT

RAPE/SEXUAL ASSAULT

Experiencing rape or sexual assault can leave deep emotional, psychological, and physical scars. It can shatter your sense of safety, trust and control – not only in the world around you, but sometimes even within your own body. In the aftermath, many people feel lost, numb, ashamed or disconnected. You may blame yourself, question what happened, or feel as though you should somehow be “over it” by now.

But what happened to you was not your fault. The responsibility always lies with the person who caused harm. Your reactions – whether fear, anger, confusion, guilt, or dissociation – are all natural responses to trauma. You survived something that should never have happened, and now your body and mind are trying to find a way to feel safe again.

Many people begin reaching out after searching for rape counselling near me, support for sexual assault in Scunthorpe, or trauma therapy in North Lincolnshire – finding a safe person to talk to is a meaningful step toward healing.

Understanding What’s Happening

Sexual trauma often leaves a deep imprint on both body and mind. You may find yourself experiencing flashbacks, panic, nightmares, or sudden waves of emotion that seem to appear from nowhere. Certain smells, sounds, or places might trigger overwhelming memories or feelings of fear.

You may notice:

  • Feelings of shame, guilt or self-blame
  • Avoidance of intimacy or reminders of the assault
  • Numbness, dissociation, or feeling “outside” of your body
  • Difficulty sleeping or constant vigilance
  • Anger, sadness, or confusion that feels hard to control
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe

These are not signs of weakness – they are your body’s way of protecting you from further harm. Healing begins with understanding that these reactions make sense in light of what you have been through.

Working Together to Heal

Therapy provides a safe and confidential space to begin rebuilding trust – in yourself, in your body, and in the world. We will always go at your pace. There is no pressure to share details before you’re ready; what matters most is that you feel safe and supported.

Together, we’ll explore ways to manage overwhelming feelings, ground yourself in the present, and release the shame that trauma so often brings. The focus will be on helping you reconnect with your sense of control, restore a feeling of safety in your body, and begin to rebuild your identity beyond what was done to you.

Healing from sexual trauma takes time and care. It’s not about forgetting – it’s about reclaiming your voice, your strength, and your right to live freely and fully.

There is Hope

Even though it may not be possible right now, healing is possible. With understanding, compassion, and the right support, many people find peace, self- acceptance, and a renewed sense of empowerment.

You are not defined by what happened to you. You are a survivor, and you deserve healing, safety and respect. Together, we can work towards helping you find calm, confidence, and connection once again – one safe, supported step at a time.
