Understanding CBT
Patterns keeping you stuck
Perhaps worry keeps taking over, your mood feels low, or you find yourself avoiding things you want to do.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) explores how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours influence one another. Working with your therapist, you can recognise patterns that keep difficulties going and practice different ways of responding.
Sessions are collaborative and practical, with goals agreed together and strategies to try between appointments.
At Grey Matters Centre in Scunthorpe, your first session is a chance to discuss what you’re experiencing, what you want to change and whether CBT suits your needs.

Understanding Whatโs Happening
When you’re struggling, thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions can feed into one another. You might expect something to go wrong, feel anxious and avoid the situation. Avoiding it brings immediate relief-but can make facing it next time feel harder.
Low mood can create a similar cycle. Withdrawing from people or activities may feel easier when you’re exhausted, yet leave you feeling more isolated and less motivated.
CBT helps you understand these cycles and identify where you can make changes. Together with your therapist, you can examine unhelpful assumptions, test different responses and take manageable steps towards things that matter to you.
This isn’t about forcing yourself to think positively or dismissing real problems. It’s about developing more balanced perspectives and practical ways to respond to difficult situations.

Practical support for change
How We Work Together
Your therapist will begin by understanding what’s troubling you, how it affects your daily life and what you would like to change. Together, you’ll agree goals that are meaningful and manageable for you.
Sessions may involve exploring a recent situation, noticing the thoughts and reactions it brought up, and working out what you could try differently. You’ll have space to reflect as well as learn practical strategies.
Between appointments, you may agree small activities to practice-such as recording thoughts, returning to an activity you’ve stopped enjoying, or gradually approaching something you’ve been avoiding.
You’ll review progress together and discuss anything that isn’t helping, so the work stays focused on your needs.
In CBT, we may work together to:
Recognise unhelpful thought patterns
Develop a more balanced perspective
Approach situations you avoid
Build confidence through small steps
Return to activities that matter
Plan how to maintain progress
Your next step
Start Working Towards Change
You may want worry to take up less of your day, feel more confident facing difficult situations, or get back to things you’ve been avoiding. Your goals will shape the work you do with your therapist.
Your first appointment is a chance to explain what’s happening and discuss whether CBT is a suitable approach for you. You can also ask questions about sessions and what to expect.
