Grey Matters Centre
We understand that our biology is affected by our surroundings and our psychological state. If we lived in a war zone we would expect to be frightened and stressed out. If we lived in that environment for some time we would not be surprised if we became run down and ill.
When we are stressed we produce the stress hormones adrenalin and cortisol. This sets off the the fight or flight survival mechanism which enables us to react to danger. These hormones increase our heart rate, we get more oxygen to our muscles, our blood pressure increases, our sugar levels are elevated etc.
With certain conditions such as: eczema, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and certain cancers, we are given cortisol as medication because our own production of these stress hormones is exhausted. For asthma we are given a copy of adrenalin and cortisol in our inhalers.
If we are treated with stress hormones then maybe that tells us stress has something to do with it and our immune system has been affected.
