Dissociation is a normal response to overwhelming trauma.
Everyone dissociates to a normal degree, such as driving to work and not remembering the journey there. This is when we have focused on our thoughts, rather than the outside world. Most people do this and it’s not a trauma response.
A trauma response is if we suffer an event that is overwhelming or threatening to our life we will disengage from our body and our feelings to keep ourselves safe.
This will cause our thoughts, feelings or body sensations to be fragmented and not join together. The experience will be stored separately in the mind from every day experience and in many cases this will result in gaps in memory.
Dissociation is a functional coping mechanism at the time of trauma but after the trauma we need to integrate the experience in order to heal. It is maladaptive if we fail to integrate and the memory remains dissociated. It is also dysfunctional as a permanent coping strategy as we cannot recognise body sensations such as feeling, tired, ill, hungry, temperatures etc.
