Depression is not just feeling down for a few days, it is prolonged and can last a considerable time. It can also be mild, moderate or severe.
For some people it was a significant event that started their depression, such as a loss of some kind. (Grieving for a loss is natural and one of the symptoms is feeling depressed). For others it can be a family trait that seems to be passed down the generations. Or perhaps there is no known cause for the onset of it.
Sometimes the depression can creep on slowly and it can take someone else to mention something, for it to be recognised. Some people try to hide it and wait for it to sort itself out.
