Do you have symptoms of constant worrying, a sense of dread and difficulty concentrating?
I work with clients on understanding and managing their anxiety symptoms. This includes understanding your own body responses and what triggers your stress response of Fight, flight (not being able to move) or, freeze or fawn (people pleasing or avoiding conflict).
Are you overwhelmed by thoughts? Thoughts can trigger your anxiety.
The threat does not have to be real to trigger your stress response. I work with clients to help them stop thoughts triggering the stress response. Changing thoughts of “I’m stupid”, “life is hard”, “they think I am useless”. it will end in disaster”, “nothing goes right for me”. I have a few techniques that can be useful from a variety of different styles of counselling – which benefit my clients – because everyone is different and what works for one person may not work for another. A lot of my clients say that counselling helps them have mores “head space” and the talking therapy helps them “understand their thoughts” and “be able to think clearer”.
Emotions can trigger your stress response too. Therapy helps you talk about your emotions to make sense of them.
If you imagine a beach ball being pushed down in water, at some point it will pop back up – usually uncontrolled! That’s what emotions are like if you keep them pushed down. Together we will help you to understand how you feel and why. Many client’s come to counselling and want their therapy goal to be “feel happier”. We can do this in a number of ways such as learning how to use distress tolerance techniques, solution-focused approach and understanding your values. Living within your values makes you feel happier.
Relationship Counselling
I am on my second year of Masters in Contemporary Relationships and provide counselling to more than one person – including couples, father/mother/son/daughter/siblings/friends. However, the knowledge I have gained on relationship theories is also very useful when counselling individuals. Quite a lot of counselling is around relationships and understanding those automatic responses and “behaviour loops”. Such as having the same argument over and over.
How we work together:
I am passionate about providing counselling services within my values of kindness, care and working together as a team. You are the expert in your life after all – and I bring my expertise and knowledge of how we behave, think and manage emotions.
The therapy will be unique to you and working together we will work towards making positive changes that are achievable and at your pace.
Although it is a daunting experience to come for counselling, I want to reassure you that I am not here to judge, diagnose or label you but will support you with what you decide to bring to the therapy room.
Why my counselling is different to other therapists is a lot of therapy will be talking therapy, where you have the opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. However, with the additional education I have gained on my Masters, I can offer a variety of counselling techniques to understand your relationship, body and brain responses (usually unconscious). This includes showing you tools and techniques to empower you to life’s ups and downs and make you more resilient long-term.
